In the second half of 1995 the new generation of the 5 Series was presented, distinguished by the design code E39 and destined to take up the baton of the E34 . The E39 achieved more success than its ancestor.

The line, designed by Chris Bangle, is very clean and smooth, and in some details even muscular. Worthy of note are the connection between the A pillar and the rib of the engine hood, or the side scratches that give it a very dynamic appearance. The picture is completed by a truncated tail and a connection between the tail itself and a very sloping pavilion.

The front part took up, updated, the concepts of the E36 and E38, with the classic round headlights covered with a transparent Plexiglas cover, while the classic double kidney was now embedded in the engine hood.

The rear part abandoned the classic “step” headlights, in place of more classic and elegant headlights, which were no longer broken by the trunk opening, but drew its line.

The interior was characterized by the classic cockpit oriented towards the driver, a thick molding in briar, but above all by the quality of the materials used. In fact, the dashboard was covered in a very soft leather-effect abs, with a surface treatment that made it immune to aging. In the design of the E39, the engineers adopted various solutions to contain the mass, making use of aluminum alloy used for the suspensions , wheel hubs and brake calipers.

Mechanically, the E39 provides the longitudinal front engine and rear wheel drive. The brakes are disc brakes (with the self-ventilated front ones), while the front end provides an evolution of the previous MacPherson scheme , this time with a double joint, and the rear end offers a multilink solution, with arms anchored to an auxiliary frame.
Massive is the use of electronics: next to the multipoint electronic injection system with integrated ignition and air flow meter, there are devices for active safety, such as ABS and traction control (ASC + T), which prevents the car from breaking down in situations of poor grip, which can be deactivated if necessary to leave the driver in total control of the car.

Internally, the E39 was more spacious than the previous model: the rear area of ​​the passenger compartment was also more comfortable for the occupants, thanks to a few more centimeters recovered during the design phase. Comfort is also perceptible from the front, thanks to the electrical adjustments of the seats (optional), steering wheel and mirrors. The driving position was also characterized by the multifunctional nature of the steering wheel (optional) which incorporates the radio and air conditioning controls.

At the time of the debut, the range included the sedan versions with 6 and 8 cylinder engines, petrol or turbodiesel , coming (albeit revised in the electronics and equipped, in some cases with the Vanos system ) from the latest evolution of the previous E34 .

The versions available at launch were:

• 520i – 6 cylinders in line 24v 1991 cm³ with 150 HP
• 523i – 6 cylinders in line 24v 2494 cm³ with 170 HP
• 528i – 6 cylinders in line 24v 2793 cm³ with 193 HP
• 525tds – 6 cylinders in line 12v 2497 cm³ with 143 HP

Within a short time they were joined by the 540i equipped with a 4398 cm³ V8 and 286 hp.
